Alas mes petits choux, divine intervention was not on my side at yesterday's auction.
Bidding went waaaay over my affordability and expectations. Within the first 5 minutes, I knew I'd be going home empty handed - but I stuck around regardless to gawk in wide-eyed disbelief at the hammer prices AND to watch the adorable nuns do their best Vanna White impressions. (For those who may not be aware, in 1960 the Sisters of Saint Dominic founded Mount Saint Mary College, where the auction was held).
Just to give you a little taste of the wild bidding that took place - A once decapitated, and crudely repaired, Chinese blanc de chine figurine fetched over $1,100 (before the 15% buyer's premium). Whaat!?
Not to fret, I did purchase a chicken salad sandwich from the food cart. And ate it on a bench facing this view...
All in all, a fun day and happy to know that these high prices went to such a great cause! Everyone wins - well, except for me. I won nothing. ; )
